As we near closer to the start of the 2025 sailing season, we wanted to provide you with some opportunities to kick-start the year with some training! So, the committee have organised a series of events across March as part of our "Warm-Up Wednesday's". These include:

  • 5th March - Race Officer Briefing
  • 12th March - Officer of the Day (OOD) Briefing
  • 19th March - Safety Briefing
  • 26th March - Rules Talk

These sessions provide some information to take on board for the season to come. All members are welcome to attend any of the sessions that they feel relevant to them. Below you can find a description of each of the sessions:

RO Briefing - 5th March

Our Race Officer briefing will provide an update of the processes required as part of the RO role. This will include what to do:

  • Before racing begins
  • During racing, including course preparation, race start, recording, and finishing
  • After racing, including transfer of results
  • The session will be a great refresh for seasoned ROs and a perfect opportunity for those who have supported as Assistant ROs to provide focussed support on how to step-up to RO.

Richard Hargreaves

OOD Briefing - 12th March

The Officer of the Day is the key point of contact during busy days across the season, including during racing. They have a duty of care for members whilst on site and therefore make decisions based on ensuring safety of members. The briefing will cover:

  • The role and responsibilities of the OOD
  • OOD responsibilities in emergency situations
  • Relationship between OOD and RO

Dan Luckett

Safety Briefing - 19th March

Our annual safety briefing is important to keep up to date with our safety procedures to keep our club running safely. We will go through:

  • The location of safety equipment in the club
  • The Major Incident Plan
  • What to expect on a rescue duty
  • Radio use
  • How to rescue different dinghies

Emma Southwell

Rules Talk - 26th March

Our annual Race Rules Talk is open to all - those just starting out on their sailing journey, youth members / squids and sharks, and seasoned racer alike. We make it a fun evening with videos clips, small boat scenarios, what if, and a Q and A session. We are sure you will gain some useful information from the evening, so why not come down and meet some of your fellow sailors.

Colin Clasper

Each session will take place at the clubhouse and begin at 7:30pm, with food beforehand from 7pm. The Rules Talk will have a run to the fish and chip shop organised by Vice-Commodore Colin Clasper, with the others being catered by the Wednesday evening galley team.

Please let us know which sessions you would like to attend and your dietary requirements, or ask us any questions about the sessions, by emailing sailing.secretary@stewartbywatersportsclub.co.uk or via the WhatsApp community poll.

Kind regards,
Your Sailing Committee
