Social Sailing Saturday
Last year we had some fantastic Social Saturdays with lots of boats out enjoying some really good weather; no howling gales and no completely windless days. Let's hope we are equally lucky this year.
The idea is to get some of the less experienced members out on the water without the pressure of racing, with the benefit of rescue cover should the need arise and to let you get to know other people in the club - not always easy when we are busy trying to get ready for racing on a Sunday morning!
If you need advice on rigging a club boat, want to try a different boat, need some help to improve your technique or anything else, this is the time to get involved. Above all this is meant to be fun so please come along and give it a go.
I must stress that we will NOT be giving basic sailing lessons! Training is available through the Stewartby Sailing School over the summer months if required.
Of course, this does not preclude the involvement of more experienced sailors and indeed we will probably need some volunteers to assist with the rescue boat, rigging boats and launching.
We had a great response last year to the "Introduction to Racing at Stewartby" sessions with about 15 people attending over several Saturdays resulting in a number going on to join in the Sunday racing, hopefully with a little more confidence than they would otherwise have had! These sessions explain everything you need to know about how we run races at the club; what all the flags and hooters mean, what happens at the start and end of a race and some of the basic rules. I'm more than happy to run these sessions again this year if anyone is interested. Where possible I will run some short trial races so that people can put what they've learned into action; after all, it's only when you actually do something a few times that you really know if you understand what's going on! If anyone who attended last year wants to do the session again then please feel free to join in.
Of course, members can sail any time they like, but if you want to make the most of the social side of sailing then we hope you will join us. If you can't make it on these days we may be able to organise something for other Saturdays, just let me know. We are very keen to get you sailing if we can.
Due to some racing commitments, I will not be available on such a regular basis this year so please check out the dates below or see the calendar on the club website. Please contact me via phone, text or WhatsApp on 07796-650131 or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested in joining in; just so that I know how many people to expect and what your needs are. Please also let me know if you are willing to volunteer to help out, when you might be available and any relevant skills.
Looking forward to seeing you out on the water on the following dates:
April 16th & 30th, May 14th & 28th, June 11th & 25th, July 2nd & 23rd, August 6th & 27th, Sept 10th & 24th
Colin Wright (the one wearing the captain's hat!)
