Social Sailing Saturdays
Last year we were hoping to encourage more members to utilise the club facilities by introducing Social Sailing on a number of Saturdays throughout the Summer. Unfortunately COVID-19 put paid to all our plans so we are going to try again this year. The idea is to get some of the less experienced sailors out onto the water without the pressure of racing, with the benefit of rescue cover should the need arise and to let you get to know other members of the club - not always easy when we are busy trying to get ready for racing on a Sunday morning!
Subject to government COVID-19 rules, the event will initially run from 10am to about 4pm with a break for lunch, but there is nothing to stop you sailing as long as you like. If enough people are interested we can run an introduction to racing in the afternoons with a simple triangular course and very basic rules.
If you need advice on rigging a club boat (Optimists, Picos, Lasers, Sport14s and more), want to try a different boat (a catamaran or a boat with an asymmetric spinnaker perhaps?) or want some pointers to improve your technique or anything else, this is the time to come and get involved. Maybe you are a family member who doesn't sail yet and would just like to have a run out with an experienced sailor to get a taster. Above all this is meant to be fun so please come along and give it a go.
I must stress that this is NOT a training session and anyone helming a boat should be of RYA level 2 or RYA Stage 3 standard or with equivalent experience. Training is available through the Stewartby Sailing School over the summer months if required.
Of course, this does not preclude the involvement of more experienced sailors and indeed we will need some volunteers to assist with rigging boats and launching, as and when the COVID rules allow.
Currently we are planning to hold Social Sailing Saturdays every other Saturday commencing on the 17th of April through to the 4th of September. We are hoping to have the galley and the bar open and have a barbecue in the evening (weather permitting) which should allow us to be a little more social than usual! Obviously members can sail any time they like, but if you want to make the most of the social side of sailing then we hope you will join us. If you can't make it on these days we may be able to organise something for other Saturdays, just let me know. We are very keen to get you sailing if we can.
Please see the club calendar on the website for dates and please contact me via phone, text or WhatsApp on 07796-650131 or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested in joining in; just so I know how many people we may have and what you want to get out of it. Please also let me know if you are willing to volunteer to help out, when you might be available and any relevant skills.
Looking forward to seeing you out on the water.
