The Junior Scheme
The junior scheme is aimed at youngsters under the age of 16. The ideal age to start sailing is about 8
Stage 1
This is aimed at absolute beginners and covers the various parts of the boat and some experience of getting it ready to sail and how to steer it. At the end you will have a basic understanding of how a boat sails.
Stage 2
This gradually introduces the skills needed to become a confident sailor. How to turn the boat around and control its speed. How to avoid collisions and a few knots.
Stage 3
In the junior scheme stage 3 is roughly equivalent to level 2 in the National Sailing Scheme. It covers rigging and launching in various conditions, how to sail in any direction, sailing techniques, capsize recovery and some basic theory. At the end of this it will be possible to confidently sail around a triangular course unaided in moderate conditions.
Stage 4
This introduces the skills to helm or crew in a double handed boat. Including rigging, launching, how to return to a jetty as well as recover a man overboard. Sailing theory and techniques for crewed boats. It is possible to take stage 3 in a crewed boat and if so then stage 4 is optional.
Advanced Modules
By the time a junior has completed the scheme they will be a confident and competent sailor. Those wishing to progress will take the same advanced modules as those in the adult scheme.
Once you have learnt to sail we offer regular coaching sessions to help you improve your sailing.
