Sailing with Spinnakers

Sailing with Spinnakers

If you are not sure about enrolling on a weekend course why not try a 1/2 day taster session? You will be taken out by one of our instructors who will demonstrate for you what sailing is all about and give you a chance to try it for yourself. If you enjoy it, and we are sure that you will, then simply enroll on a Level 1 course.

The Adult Scheme

The RYA National Sailing Scheme is organised as a series of modules. They can all be completed in two days and will be run by RYA qualified instructors.

Start Sailing – Level 1

This course provides an introduction to the sport of sailing and by the end of it the student will have a basic understanding of boat handling techniques and basic background knowledge. The skills learnt on this course should then be consolidated with the Level 2 course.

Basic Skills – Level 2

Upon competion of this course the student will be a competent and safety conscious sailor capable of sailing independently in light conditions. They will have improved techniques and will be capable of recovering from a capsize as well as be able to perform a range of sailing manoeuvres, such as coming alongside a jetty.

If you are already at level 2 then we can take you through the

Better Sailing course – Level 3

During this course you will consolidate the skills you already have and improve them with some coaching. You will have the chance to try some taster sessions from the advanced modules to help you decide how to take your sailing to the next level.

Advanced modules

All of the avdanced modules are two day courses.

Start racing

This course will furnish you with the skills and knowledge you will need to participate safely in the sport of dinghy racing. Apart from boat handling the course covers tactics, rules and boat tuning. A great course for those thinking about racing.

Seamanship skills

This course is aimed at you  being able to handle a boat in all circumstances and to solve problems afloat. The course comprises among other things launching and recovering a boat in different circumstances, reducing sail, stopping, man overboard recovery and anchoring. You should be able to sail to level 2 standard before taking this course.

Sailing with spinnakers

This is designed to enable you to rig the boat, gybe and recover one type of spinnaker, conventional or asymmetric and sail the best course downwind. Level 2 standard is also required before starting this course.

Performance sailing

The aim of this course is to improve your sailing in all conditions through coaching and to give you the confidence to sail performance dinghies. The training will be carried out in two person boats with spinnaker. By the end you will be sailing faster and more eficiently. You will be able to sail to level 2 standard and probably have sailed for a season before joining this course.
