Stewartby hosted the final Phantom class training event of 2009 on Saturday 12th December.
Four local boats were joined by visitors from Margate, Oxford, and North London. The training was conducted by current Eastern Area Champion, John Wayling, and former National Champion, Simon Childs.
Our own Club Champion, Andrew Gregory (Phantom 1210), provides a report on the day’s events and pictures are available in the website gallery.
The day started with a tuning and rigging demonstration, followed by practice starts and tacking/gybing drills. After a much needed pit-stop for chilli and debrief, it was back to the water for longer races, boat speed tuition, and more drills. The fleet then retired to the Phantom sailor’s natural habitat: the bar, for much needed refreshment and discussion on the day’s events.
The improvement in everyone’s sailing during the day was epitomised by the Stewartby Ians giving us all a good thrashing in the last race of the day; well done guys!
Stewartby Phantom sailors will be looking to hone their new skills in preparation for the Class Winter Championships at Oxford Sailing Club in February 2010. The Phantom Class also looks forward to visiting Stewartby on the 2&3 October 2010 for the inaugural open meeting.
If you too want too join our rapidly expanding fleet please contact Andrew Gregory for a test sail.
