2 day coaching weekend with Ian Patience, the RYA’s National Youth Squad Coach

11th/12th September. This Course is not to be missed. Over two days our young sailors will receive advice and instruction from one of the UK’s top Topper coaches.

The whole weekend will cost just £ 10 to cover the cost of fuel for the support boats. If you want to camp over at the club, then you’re more than welcome to.

Bonus Family Fun!

On the evening of Saturday 11th September the club will be hosting its annual moonlight sail. Starting at 7.30 and finishing after dark, the race is great for families. This year the theme is “How does your Garden grow?” so decorate you boat and get dressed up.

Afterwards, we’ll light the BBQ. All you need to bring is some food to cook or share.

Topper Open

Saturday 18th September. Want to try out your newly found racing skills? This event is just for you and your topper. Arrive at the club around 9.30 and the racing starts at 11am and lasts all day. If you’re a little unsure of what to do then there will be race coaches to help you around the course.

Best of all the event is free to all club members.

Wednesday Night Sailing

If you enjoyed the race evening during summer camp, why not come along on Wednesday evenings until the end of September. See the website for start times.

Blackaby Cup

Over the weekend of the 9th/10th October the club holds the final weekend in the club championship. This event has a special category for Juniors.

Not yet a Junior Member of Stewartby?

Junior membership costs just £29 and you can continue to enjoy sailing at Stewartby with the friends you’ve made at camp. If you have your own boat, we have safety boat cover on Saturdays until mid-October and every Sunday all year round! If you want to hire a topper then this will cost you just £5 per session.

Being a member also means we’re better able to keep you in touch with everything that is going on at the club. There’s plenty to fun to be had all year round with special events and training for junior and youth sailors.

For more information please check-out the website or email: learn2sail@swsc.org.uk.

This year the RYA have created a new level in the Adult Sailing Scheme: Level 3 Better Sailing

The aim of this new level is to build on those skills gained in the Level 1 & 2 course and to give a taste of the advanced modules. Many people are put off the further levels as they are termed “advanced” perhaps feeling that they could not describe themselves as advanced sailors. However that is where Level 3 Better Sailing comes in.

The course is mostly coaching on the water with very little of the theory that is squeezed in to the previous levels. Any theory points that you are unsure about will of course be explained if you wish. You may then choose with your instructor which of the advanced levels you may wish to try. So, for instance your instructor may take you for a session with a Spinnaker, maybe try trapezeing from Performance Sailing, have a bash at anchoring or reefing afloat from Seamanship Skills, maybe take part in one of the races on a Sunday with your instructor on board with you to explain what is happening and (hopefully!) keep you out of trouble.

It is a two day course and after it you should feel much more confident in your sailing ability and perhaps have some idea of how you may wish to take your sailing further still. The information about the course is accessible through the sailing school pages, alternatively if you would like to discuss things further just drop us an e mail, phone or just come along and have a chat.

Saturday Junior Coaching has been a great success this autumn with an average of 12 youngsters each week. Those taking part are seeing improvements to their sailing and some youngsters are progressing quickly towards being capable racers. These sessions run by Laurie Kibblewhite and Tom Weatherhead have built on successful Volvo Championship Club programme earlier in the year and the enormously popular summer camp.

We’re pleased to announce the first few dates in 2010 have been announced:

17th January

20th February

13th March

These sessions are all day training sessions and will cost £25 per session.

Much has been achieved in the last 4 months. A rolling programme of work has meant that all 12 of the club Toppers are now rigged as centre-main and are up-to basic race standard. In addition the Sailing School garages have been re-organised and we now have a training room near the water and more room for storage of kit.

The format of the ‘early 2010′ dates is a little different from the autumn sessions. We will be running all day events with several short sessions on the water during the day. This ensures that everyone remains warm and it allows for more focus on theory.

Keeping warm is very important. We strongly advise that everyone wears either a full wetsuit or drysuit. As always we have wetsuits that can be borrowed free of charge. You also need to bring two fleeces, hat, gloves and a full change of clothing (in addition to what you arrive in) and a towel. If you are going to invest a small amount in clothing this christmas, a pair of warm winter sailing gloves will the best investment you can make.

The goal through the winter is to get as many young people up to ‘club racing’ standard and to get them out on the Topper Open circuit, but more on this as the winter progresses.

It is important that you keep in touch with us over the winter and let us know which sessions you intend coming to. This is to ensure that we are able to provide hot meals through the Galley for both sailors and parents.
