The 2010 midland traveller’s series kicked off at Northampton Sailing Club on the 3rd July. The fleet included a number of ex-national & inland champions and even a former Laser World Champion.

The wind was 6-15knots and the temperature in excess of 20 degrees. The shifty conditions meant that it was a true day a snakes and ladders with big gains & losses to be made on most legs of the course.

After three races Simon Childs counted two bullets to win the event ahead of supporting SWSC members, John Wayling in 5th, Andrew Gregory in 9th and Ian Sullivan in 18th place.

Stewartby Sailing Club hosted the seventh round of the 2010 Laser Home Counties and Eastern region Grand Prix series on Saturday 22nd May. Ten visitors joined four home club entries and all were greeted with a light force 2 to 3 wind with occasional big holes and scorching sunshine.

Race Officers Simon Witham and Barney Proud set a compact square course for the two back to back races before lunch.
The fleet made a clean start in race one and Graham Lund from Aldenham Sailing Club led after the first lap followed closely by Alan Bishop from Girton SC in second and Simon Miles SWSC in third. Behind the first three some close racing took place with the compact course keeping places close. Six laps were completed with Lund first across the line followed by Bishop in second, Miles in third and Krzysztof Bonicki from NHEB who had worked his way through the fleet to finish fourth.
The compact square course was retained for the second race. An excellent start saw Graham Smith from Graffam Water SC lead after the first lap followed by Bishop and Lund. The fleet completed four laps with Smith finishing first followed by Lund and Bishop.
After lunch the wind had swung through 40 degrees necessitating a change of course. At the start the wind swung even further resulting in a heavily starboard biased line, despite this the fleet started cleanly with most competitors tacking onto port immediately. At the end of the first lap Lund lead with Miles in second and Ryan Langston from Beccles SC in third. With the exception of Lund who managed to maintain his lead from start to finish there was considerable place changing throughout the rest of the fleet. Lund crossed the line first followed by Bishop in second and Bonicki in third.
The fourth race started cleanly and Lund lead at the end of the first lap followed by Mike Oddy from Wembley SC in second and Miles in third. With large wind shifts and calm patches places changed throughout the fleet , at the end of four laps Bishop did well to finish first followed closely by Lund in second, Miles in third and Adrian Degge H(B)SC in fourth.

Overall Results:

We’ve updated The edited version of the 2010 duty list available on the website. It now reflects the version you will have received recently in the post, plus a few more recent changes. You can find the duty list by following menus:
“Sailing Club” > “Club Duties” or you can jump straight to the list by clicking here.

The list is published in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. A free reader can be downloaded at www.adobe.com.

Please read-on for more information about the published list.

What to do if you have a problem with your duty

If you have a problem with the date that you have been allocated, please let us know as soon as possible. Email is preferable and our address is duty@swsc.org.uk

My Name doesn’t appear on the list, why?

The duty list has been assembled from the duty list forms submitted when you renewed and from those completed on-line.

If your name does not appear on the list then your form may still be on its way to us. Alternatively, you didn’t complete a form in which case your duty will be allocated when we receive confirmation from the club’s membership secretary that you’ve rejoined. You can use the online duty form to let us know your preferred date today; otherwise we’ll simply allocate a date from those that are left.

What will happen if I don’t turn up for my duty

Firstly, if you have a genuine problem that means you cannot make the date we have allocated you and, a) you let us know before the date or b) you let the OOD know or a committee member know on the morning of your duty day, then we will simply make a note and allocate you a duty later in the year. We genuinely understand that last minute emergencies at home or work are sometimes unavoidable.

Performing one duty per year is a requirement of your membership and you simply fail to turn-up without trying to contact us in advance, then you will have broken a Sailing Section rule. You may have to explain your absence to the committee and face further action in respect to your membership

Please let us know if you have a problem.

Fine settled weather bought a weekend of sunshine, spring warmth and very little wind. Conditions which would test both the two race officers and all 22 competitors.

See the full article for the race report. The race results can be found here.

Saturdays racing started in a light and fickle breeze. A short delay of around 25 minutes allowed Race Officer Karl Pountney sufficient time to put in a simple triangle course with a fairly accurate beat. A good start and first lap saw Andy Gregory (Phantom) and Steve & Ruth Ivory (RS200) lead the fleet around the course. Over three laps they build a considerable lead over the remainder of the fleet but in the end, Andy pipped the RS200 to first place by 16 seconds.

The streakers had threatened all through race one. However, it would be race 2 where they would triumph. This time out the wind played havoc with the course setting with 3 minutes to go the fleet were running towards the startling, but with just seconds to go the wind filled in from the brickyard bank and the race was afoot. The fleet largely stuck together, light puffs from all directions made reading the conditions difficult. As the fleet reached down to the leeward mark on the final lap, a last minute shift allowed the 8 boats that had rounded the mark the chance to run to the line but leave Simon Whitham & Barney Proud (Tasar) and the Ivory RS200 beating to the mark. Simon and the Ivorys ended up tying for 6th place at the foot of the results sheet.

Sunday came and better conditions gave Race Officer Gordon walls a better chance of avoiding the previous day’s problems. The first race used more of the lake than Karl had dared to use the previous day and the fleet set off. Simon Miles (Laser) had a great start along with Terry Van Rijn, however once again Andy Gregory’s Phantom made the best of the conditions. Yet again the Streakers put in a strong performance. Bill Strange picked up 2nd and Peter Thornley 3rd.

Race 4 took place over a long course but the wind promptly died to nothing. All competitors were finished on their 1st lap with Andy Gregory, Terry Van Rijn and Simon Miles taking the spoils on strong early leads.

The event finale was a strange affair. Over tea the wind conditions looked no better leading to many helms throwing in the towel and throwing their covers over their boats. The 6 helms that took to the water started in the faintest breeze which built quickly resulting the fleet putting a large number of quick laps. The race’s results would ultimately reflect the competitions overall rankings.

Andy Gregory (Phantom)

Terry Van Rijn (Rooster)

Peter Thornley (Streaker)

Steve & Ruth Ivory (RS200)

Setting courses in light conditions is a tricky affair and not for the feint hearted, you could guess the wind direction, bung in a square and hope one leg will be a beat, give up and go home. Patience is key and a thick skin to deal with the sledging from the competitors. Saturday’s Race Officer has just one piece of advice to anyone running racing on a baking hot day with no wind: Wear Sunscreen, and plenty of it.

MKSC Open Pursuit Icicle Race – Feb 7th 2010

A race report by: Gerry Howcroft

My first outing of the year, an overcast grey day with a steady force 3 wind and 4 Deg Centigrade greeted us at the start of the race.

There were about 8 groups to start, with Simon and I in the demo Tasar and Barney and Howard also in a Tasar, and following were the Phantom, Blaze and Lasers.

Behind us was the single class MRXs from Wembley and the RS300s, both beautifully elegant looking boats on the water, with very little wetted area and wide flaring, to perch your bum on.

The force 3 wind was blowing along the length of the lake giving a course with 2 long beats and several short Broad Reach/Runs back down the lake; not the ideal conditions for a Tasar with a heavy weight crew.
It took me a while to remember what to do, I forgot how much there is to do in the Tasar, I felt like a beached flailing octopus, sorry Simon; tried hard, could do better!

We did start getting it together about half way through the race, just as John Carron in his RS300 went past, with his sights on the guys at the front. We started picking off the trailing Lasers one by one, and behind us the MRX and RS300 fleet were doing the same thing, then on one downwind leg, a veritable fleet of MRX and 300’s went past in procession, leaving Simon and I with nothing to do except shrug, by now in the cold conditions, with a slight shiver to it.

Up at the front Howard and Barney were battling it out with the Phantom, and John in his RS300 hot on their heels, but what was that at the front? An Otter!

John muscled his way past Howard and Barney then in the last couple of laps got in front of the Phantom and the Otter.

Meanwhile Simon and I were jockeying with a couple of Lasers, which we finally saw off, then the Blaze was in our sights, which we managed to get in front of on one of the reaches and finally put some space between us. We were now coming close to the end of the race with a Byte and Solo just in front; we set off on the chase.

It was the long windward leg, it was hard to decipher who was in front as we were approaching the mark, the Byte on port and us on Starboard. She had called it too tight and we squeezed past her right at the mark, which found her having to put in a short tack, leaving her 5 boat lengths behind.

We then started out after the Solo; we were gaining fast on a broad reach, reeling him in, boat length by boat length, when it happened! The dreaded hooter, to signal the end of the race, finishing us in 14th out of 21 starters, (sorry again Simon) wish I had got it together sooner, must be because I didn’t have the missus shouting at me!!

It was an enjoyable race, good course, well run, good experience, MKSC did a good job, big thanks to their hospitality, and keeping us warm with drinks and bacon butties.

The usual prize giving followed with 3rd place going to Howard and Barney in the Taser, 2nd went to Wembley man in his Phantom, with 1st place going to John Carron in the RS300. There was 1 DNF and 1 DSQ the OTTER, for 1man in a 2 man dinghy, no wonder he was hard for the leaders to catch.

Eight boats took the water in conditions much windier than forecast on Sunday 14th February. It was to be a Phantom 1 & 2 with new member Ian Sullivan taking honours in both races. The course and race management was provided by Karl Pountney and support boat by Tim Browning and Duncan Wilson. Thanks also to Dave Grummitt, Chris Janes and Steve Ivory who hung around just long enough to be given something to do.

Race Report

By Karl Pountney, Solo 4675

The conditions were cold, very cold. However, for the morning race 6 boats readied themselves for racing in light, but steady wind conditions.

From the start of the first race the fleet split in two. The fast handicap group of Mark Norman’s Phantom along with Duncan Wilson’s Phantom (crew Tim Browning) made quick progress to the windward mark. Behind the slow handicap group of Nick Jones (Solo), Karl Pountney (Solo), Kathryn McRitchie (Topper) and Peter Billington (Streaker) were close and swapping positions throughout the first beat. Kathryn’s Topper began to fall behind on the reaching legs. Karl and Nick managed to keep pace with a very quick Peter Billington but on the beat of the second lap Karl’s choice to use the right-hand side of the course left the way for Nick to slip through and gain a lead of several boat lengths

On the final lap, the Phantom appeared to have the race in the bag both on the water and on handicap. The Kestrel found the course had limited spinnaker possibilities and would have to wait to see what times the slow fleet would post.

On the final beat, Karl had closed the gap with Nick to just a boat length or two. Approaching the windward mark, Karl approached on port-tack pointing high and stealing back the difference. Nick approached on Starboard forcing Karl to either tack and shoot the mark above close hauled or take a chance on sneaking through on port and tacking on the mark. It was close, but too close. Forcing Nick to alter course, Karl had no choice to do turns and handed the race to Nick

At the finish, the positions were: 1. Mark Norman, 2. Peter Billington, 3. Duncan Wilson, 4. Nick Jones, 5. Karl Pountney, 6. Kathryn McRitchie.

Race 2 was almost a reverse of the previous course with what looked like (and was) a very long running leg down the lake. With the start-line so long, the whole fleet (now including Terry Van Rijn’s Rooster) hit the line on the gun.

The first beat was eventful with a port/startboard coming together of Terry Van Rijn and Duncan Wilson at the windward mark with Duncan coming away with penalty turns.

The long run gave Duncan the chance to claw back the lost time and eventually Duncan would take second from Terry on handicap.

The slow handicap boats were close for a while but eventually Peter and Karl were able to obtain a half-leg advantage over Nick that Nick wasn’t recover from in the failing wind. Karl was only 2 boat lengths behind Peter at the finish. However after they cleared the line both would be involved in a collision as the both boats raised their rudders at the same time. Fortunately, very little damage despite the loud bang

At the finish it was: 1. Mark Norman, 2. Duncan Wilson, 3. Terry Van Rijn.

Thanks must go to Dave and Harry excellent race management. Support Boat cover was provided by Charlotte Howard and Ian Howard. Galley, with its hot soup and Sausage/Chips, was laid-on by Sarah Norman.

It was Charlotte Howard’s 16th Birthday today. Everyone wishes her many happy returns.
