Over the weekend of the 24th and 25th July, the second round of the Club Championship took place. With 5 keenly fought races over two days of very similar conditions, Peter Thornley (Streaker) took 1st place beating Ian Howard by 1 point. The Results are now published in the section of the website.

Many thanks goes to the duty crews who managed to ensure things went smoothly. In particular:

Race Officers: Paul Griffiths (Sat) & Bill Strange (Sun)
Assistant Race Officers: Nicola Griffiths (Sat) & Tim Browning (Sun)
Safety Boat: Phillip Kent, Alan Southwell, Emma & Matt Daniels, Kevin Jones & Andy Philips
OODs: Karl Pountney (Sat) & Mark Noman (Sun)

Notable amongst the competitors is Jon Finch. Sadly Jon fell foul of the Cup rules with the three 7th places recieved sailing the Kestrel picked-up from Sunday being discounted as he’d entered a Sprint 15 on the Saturday.

The Solo Open is due to take place on the 10th of July with the first race commencing at 11am. There are a couple of important points regarding this event:

In some listings the event is billed as the Solo and Streaker Class Open. This is a error and due to there having been a recent Nationals at the club, there will be no streaker open event this year.

We are looking for a suitably experienced race officer and assistant to oversee the on-the-water activities. If you are interested in taking this on please contact Karl Pountney as soon as possible.

Email from Bill Strange for publication on the website

From: Bill Strange
Date: 28 June 2010 08:24:11
To: [webmaster]@swsc.org.uk
Subject: Streaker Nationals

Dear [webmaster]

Hope you can add this belated thank you on to the Website:

Streaker Nationals – 12th and 13th June 2010

We should have done this before now, but on behalf of all the Streaker Sailors from Stewartby, thank you to Ruth and team for all of the organisation before and during the event. Thank you to Sarah, Rosie and all the team in the Galley for the wonderful food and thank you to the ‘Trolley Dollies’ for the organisation of the trolleys before and after the races.

Comments were made again this Saturday, when we met up with some of the Streaker Sailors, about what a great time they had and about how well it had been run. One new comment “how wonderful it was just to step in to the boat ‘ like royalty’ with nothing else to worry about other than the sailing”.

So thank you to everyone.

Bill

Prize Giving Mentions

The cumination of the event was the prizegiving where Alan Gillard from the class association thanked the club for the efforts and special thanks were given to:

Ruth Ivory and her team for the efforts in organising the event ashore. Special mention should go to Steve Ivory who handled all the registrations in advance of the event and Pat Strange for manning the reception desk on the day.

Sarah Norman for the food. This was much praised by everyone over the weekend. Mark Norman, Rosie Norman and Cherry all deserve a mention too.

Nigel Denchfield and his team for the on-the-water organisation. Nigel thanked everyone who helped including Mark Norman (Gunner), Simon Miles (windlogger) and Fiona Denchfield (assistant Race Officer). Mark Layers, Steve Ivory, Emma Southwell, Nick Jones and Thurstan Ollerearnshaw. And the support boat drivers and crew.

A special mention was given to Karl Pountney spent most of the weekend bent over his laptop working to bring the race results to competitors and their guests in almost record time. Karl would like to thank Rosie Norman for her help in entering and checking the data.

Photography was done by Robert Finch and Karl Pountney. Between them 2000 images were taken, processed and shown on the big-screen in the bar area You will have seen one image on the home-page from time to time.

Streaker Class Association Website

The streaker class association has provided a full report on the event at their website at http://results.streaker-class.org.uk/results2010/Natchamps.php. A selection of the best pictures taken by Karl Pountney and Robert Finch can be found there too.

Yachts and Yachting Article

The Y&Y report and article can be found here. Again with photographs by Karl Pountney and Robert Finch.

The sun may not have been shining but the rain held off and with a light
breeze, conditions for most of the day were perfect for introducing
members of the public to the sport of sailing.

The sun may not have been shining but the rain held off and with a light
breeze, conditions for most of the day were perfect for introducing
members of the public to the sport of sailing.

A steady stream started to arrive from when the gates opened at 11am and by the end of the day
over a hundred and fifty visitors had been recorded.

There was a considerable amount of interest in all sections of the club
with the Angling Section signing up a new member within the first 10
minutes of the gates opening, the Sailing Section also signed two new
members on the day and gave out many more membership forms and
information on courses.

There was a constant stream of people wanting to go out sailing and
volunteers were kept busy both on the shore and afloat. The echo trips
also proved popular this year and the addition of some fishing lines off
the back of the boat allowed a more practical demonstration when in
total five fish were caught throughout the day.

The power boaters reported a considerable amount of interest in their
junior training package and the skiers provided a display of their
skills on the water.

A big thank you to everyone who worked so hard both in the preparation
on the Saturday and on the day to make it a success

We’ve updated The edited version of the 2010 duty list available on the website. It now reflects the version you will have received recently in the post, plus a few more recent changes. You can find the duty list by following menus:
“Sailing Club” > “Club Duties” or you can jump straight to the list by clicking here.

The list is published in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. A free reader can be downloaded at www.adobe.com.

Please read-on for more information about the published list.

What to do if you have a problem with your duty

If you have a problem with the date that you have been allocated, please let us know as soon as possible. Email is preferable and our address is duty@swsc.org.uk

My Name doesn’t appear on the list, why?

The duty list has been assembled from the duty list forms submitted when you renewed and from those completed on-line.

If your name does not appear on the list then your form may still be on its way to us. Alternatively, you didn’t complete a form in which case your duty will be allocated when we receive confirmation from the club’s membership secretary that you’ve rejoined. You can use the online duty form to let us know your preferred date today; otherwise we’ll simply allocate a date from those that are left.

What will happen if I don’t turn up for my duty

Firstly, if you have a genuine problem that means you cannot make the date we have allocated you and, a) you let us know before the date or b) you let the OOD know or a committee member know on the morning of your duty day, then we will simply make a note and allocate you a duty later in the year. We genuinely understand that last minute emergencies at home or work are sometimes unavoidable.

Performing one duty per year is a requirement of your membership and you simply fail to turn-up without trying to contact us in advance, then you will have broken a Sailing Section rule. You may have to explain your absence to the committee and face further action in respect to your membership

Please let us know if you have a problem.

Success Stories

Mr W advertised his Solo a popular class in the club and much underused in recent years. Having seen the advert on the club’s website Mr B, a new member, took the plunge and took ownership of the boat in March

Mr P placed a quick ad on the website for his Phantom (Black Label), word got out quickly and the website advert was picked up by a member of the class association and a link placed in their for sale board. The boat was sold within days and is now sailed enthusiastically in Essex

Mr P had an buoyancy aid going spare which was quickly snapped up by Mr S.
