Dinghy Racing

Special Events

Throughout the year the club hosts a number of special events where we aim to make racing that bit more enjoyable and appeal to the wider membership, not just the seasoned racers.

Spring Open Handicap

This event has its origins in a one-day competition hosted for club members during the 2008 Milton Keynes Cup. The idea was simple, hold a singe day’s racing with 3 races and award a prize to the boat with the best 2 results. While the Club’s team were hard at work winning the MK Cup for the club, everyone else had a great time racing and it was decided to hold the event the following year.

In 2009 the one-day competition needed a date and after several drafts of the club diary, the event found its way to the beginning of April as the ‘Summer Season Opening Event’. Not happy with the event name and keen to offer a event that we could invite other sailors we knew at other clubs in the area, the event finally became the “Spring Open Handicap”.

The event not typical of other racing as there are two fleets and the results are not combined to provide an overall winner. The two fleets are as follows:

  • Fast Handicap: Handicaps from 600 – 1100
  • Slow Handicap: Handicaps from 1101 – 1400

Moonlight Race

Ever fancied sailing in the dark?

The moonlight race takes place in September as part of a wider social evening and barbecue at the club. Starting while still light, racing takes place while the sun sets and the darkness of the night decends.

The race lasts around 90 minutes with prizes awarded to the winners and the best-lit boat.

The principles and rules outlined in the Wednesday night sailing section apply.

Boxing Day Hangover Race

A one-race event for the Hangover Trophy and silly seasonal prizes.

Perfect for blowing away the excess pudding. Meet up afterwards for some turkey butties and some festive drinks.

Takes place on December 26th annually.
